Aerosols come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and chemical composition, and in order to understand their toxic properties, their ability to absorb or scatter radiation, or their ability to act as sinks (via surface uptake) for gaseous intermediates, it is crucial to have a detailed knowledge of the number density and chemical composition as a function of size.
